Your pay and benefits

Your pay and benefits will depend on the type of leave you are taking. Furthermore, some types of leave will dictate whether you will receive statutory or contractual pay.

Some of this information can be found in our helpful 'FAQs' page; but to further assist, we have set out below some additional information on calculating pay and understanding your entitlements whilst away from the workplace.

Please note some of the guidance is linked to the respective Force’s intranet sites. As such, links within guidance may not work. Where there is a link to forms or guidance, you should find this within the applicable tab on this site. Should you need any further support or are unable to locate any information / forms, please use the ‘contact us’ page to message a member of the HR Operations or Payroll teams.

Please see below links to both Force's pay scales. These are reviewed at least annually, with changes generally taking effect from 1 September each year.

In some cases the changes may be delayed, so where no change is identified in the below links, these will be updated by a member of the team as soon as possible.

It is recognised that calculating pay during or following a period of family leave can be a stressful matter. Therefore, the Force has some helpful tips and resources available to individuals to assist them in achieving this.

How to calculate your Gross Pay (pay before deductions)

  1. Obtain your salary rate using the Rate Table
  2. Calculate your monthly amount using formula Annual Salary / 12 for the monthly amount
  3. If you are PART TIME, adjust accordingly using Hours/Full Time Hours* x Annual Salary / 12

*Full Time Hours:                 POLICE = 40         STAFF=37

How to calculate your Net Pay (pay after deductions)

1. If you are in a Pension Scheme you will need to calculate the Pension due on your gross pay first.

2. Open the HMRC Tax Calculator. Subtract any pension from your Gross Pay, this should leave you with your Taxable Pay (see red arrow). You will need to enter your Tax Code (green arrow) and Cumulative pay (yellow arrow) and tax paid (blue arrow) which are found on your most recent payslip. Enter the last day of the following month as the payment date**

**I DO NOT HAVE MY MOST RECENT PAYSLIP TO HAND – Use the tax code shown and select YES under 'Is the period of pay on a week 1 or month 1 basis' (and do not complete previous totals)

**I DO NOT HAVE ANY PAYSLIP TO HAND - Use code BR and select YES under 'Is the period of pay on a week 1 or month 1 basis' (and do not complete previous totals)

3. Open HMRC NI Calculator. National Insurance is calculated on all salary. Your NI category is shown on your most recent pay slip. If this is unavailable please use A.

4. Remember to consider all other deductions such as UNISON or Sports Lottery deductions when calculating pay.

Police Federation Maternity Pay Calculator

The Police Federation have also created a helpful pay calculator. This can be accessed via their website below:

For all things maternity, please see the Police Federation Guide:

If you are in receipt of allowances whilst away from the workplace for reasons pertaining to family leave, in most cases, these will remain in place whereby you are in receipt of contractual leave and pay. Where you are in receipt of statutory pay, you will be paid in accordance with the statutory provisions in place at the time.

For further advice and guidance on this, please contact a member of the Payroll Team via the 'contact us' page.
